Real rock journalism back from the grave…our motto is “Sex. Horror. Rock N’ Roll.”
LAS VEGAS, NV (PRWEB) JUNE 25, 2004
Real rock journalism is back from the grave…in the form of ‘Crypt Magazine.’ The brainchild of Detroit native, and Editor-In-Grief, David Necro (aka ‘The Motor City Deadman,) ‘Crypt Magazine’ celebrates 3 things near and dear to his black heart; sex, horror, and rock n’ roll. Which not coincidentally, also serves as the magazine’s motto. According to Mr. Necro, “This is the magazine that I always wanted to see and read. Sure, there was ‘Creem’ and ‘RIP’ when I was growing up, but everything since then has fallen short in 1 way or another. There’s not too much out there that makes me wanna look at it, let alone buy it and keep it around for months, even years.” A former intern for ‘MTV.com’ who also struggled to get noticed as freelance writer, David cashed all of his chips in to do his own project, his way, and the results are in the pages of this magazine. ‘Crypt Magazine’ is one that is very much from the street and shoots from the hip; there’s no fancy degrees or high-level music biz connections here, and what you see is the culmination of hours and hours of experience in the field. “There’s a lot of talent out there but not too many editors of other publications are willing to take that chance for whatever reason; I found it, cultivated it, and utilized it. I pushed myself and my colleagues to do the best we can do with what little we had. I think we did alright, but we can always do better. That’s the key to success right there.”

‘Crypt Magazine’ offers in-depth coverage on artists that either reflect rock’s true rebellious nature, ones that have a true grasp on what the horror genre is, and of course those that delve into the dark side of life. Or all 3 in tandem. “This is not a magazine that limits itself to 1 specific genre of rock n’ roll, which is why the term rock n’ roll is used. Whether it’s Punk, Metal, Gothic, or what have you, we feel it’s all rock n’ roll, because that’s where all of it comes from. So if you see say, Alice Cooper and an underground punk band in the same issue, don’t be surprised,” says Mr. Necro. In addition, the magazine seeks artists that offer an emotional experience, and not based solely on financial and/or commerical success. In music or in other creative outlets. “Any magazine’s job should be letting the reader know more about the artist or subject at hand, but we go further, we truly pick brains and don’t mince words,” says the Editor. “More than that, we want the reader to think and feel; to give them more insight on the artists they like, and turn them on to artists they either never heard of or wouldn’t give a second glance. Sure, this is a business, and should be treated as such, but ‘Crypt Magazine’ never loses sight of the artistic side, and selling out to me means you compromised your art for commerce. Making a killing on something you put your heart and soul into, is what the American Dream is all about. Who wants to be poor? Life’s too short!”

Very true, and this magazine uses images of death to serve as reminder to enjoy life to its fullest. Glorifying death and trying to go for shock value are not the goals here. “There’s a lot of different meanings that you can read into here. That’s good. I like that. It means people are using their imaginations, and we encourage this,” Mr. Necro says. “Plus, I just think the shit looks cool; I like sleaze, horror, and humor. I know there’s a quite a few boils and ghouls who are with me on this point.” To this, the Editor of ‘Crypt Magazine’ doesn’t take all of this dark imagery too seriously, and upon reading the pages of this magazine you will find that humor abounds and things are kept very tongue-in-cheek.

Speaking of dark imagery, is it just a gimmick to sell magazines and get noticed? Mr. Necro’s answer to that is; “Everyone’s gotta gimmick in this business, whether they slap on 10 gallons of make-up, and are dressed in patent leather from head to toe or in dirty t-shirts and ripped up jeans. So if you wanna call it that, go ahead. But, this is what I’m into, and since it’s my magazine, it’s gonna reflect that. If anyone doesn’t like it, well they can get their own goddamn magazine! It’s a free-market out there. Competition is good.”

The premiere issue features exclusive interviews with Glenn Danzig, DBY, Electric Hellfire Club, G.B.H, Genitorturers, Mortiis, Motorhead, Slayer, Testament, and Type O Negative.

Live reviews of Circle Jerks, Cult of The Psychic Fetus, G.B.H, Iggy and The Stooges, Impotent Sea Snakes, King Diamond, KISS, Nuclear Assault, Samael, and Type O Negative.

Album reviews of Blitzkid, Alice Cooper, The Datsuns, DBY, The Everdead, The Exploited, Fear Cult, Fink, Graveyard Boulevard, Jane’s Addiction, KISS, Marilyn Manson, Motorhead, The Necro Tonz, Penis Flytrap, Pissing Razors, Iggy Pop, Rock City Morgue, Sin City Ghouls, Type O Negative, and more.

And much, much more…

Finally, we leave you with this question; Is this magazine a nightmare…or is it an escape from the nightmare that is the real world? The forces behind this magazine think the latter. But don’t take their word for it. You be judge. Mr. Necro urges you to “enter the crypt, it’s un-dead in here!”
